Phonics Classes in Burwood
A foundation in sounds, words and early reading
J Phonics English Learning offers Phonics Fundamentals for preschool and kindergarten children aged 4–6 at our Burwood learning centre. Our structured synthetic phonics approach connects spoken sounds with written letters, helping children practise the building blocks of reading and spelling.
Is this the right starting point for your child?
If you are choosing a first phonics class, or your child recognises letters but finds it difficult to join their sounds into words, understanding the course content can help.
Phonics Fundamentals focuses on early sound and word skills. Our small classes use interactive activities, games and stories within a warm learning environment. If you are unsure which program to choose, request a free assessment to discuss a suitable starting point.
What children practise
Letter sounds
Recognising letters and producing their sounds.
Phonemic awareness
Listening for and identifying individual sounds in spoken words.
Blending and segmenting
Joining sounds to read words, and breaking words into sounds for spelling.
Digraphs and letter combinations
Exploring how letters work together to represent sounds.
Phoneme manipulation
Adding, removing or changing sounds to make different words.
- Blending brings the sounds in a word together; segmenting takes a spoken word apart into its sounds. These are related skills, practised for different purposes: reading and spelling.
How is phonics different from reading comprehension?
Phonics focuses on the relationship between sounds and letters, including how to decode unfamiliar words. Reading comprehension focuses on understanding a text: its vocabulary, ideas and details.
Our Reading & Comprehension program builds on foundational phonics and places greater emphasis on reading fluency, vocabulary and understanding. It is listed for early primary children in Years 1–2, aged 6–8. Explore both programs if you are deciding where your child should start.

What age is Phonics Fundamentals for?
The program is designed for preschool and kindergarten children aged 4–6.
My child knows the alphabet. Is phonics still different?
Knowing letter names is different from working with their sounds. Our course includes blending, segmenting and listening for sounds within words. Share what your child currently finds easy or difficult when you enquire.
Should I choose phonics or Reading & Comprehension?
Phonics Fundamentals concentrates on early sound and word skills. Reading & Comprehension builds on those foundations with more emphasis on fluent reading and meaning. A free assessment can help identify a suitable starting point.
